Who is this qualification for?
This qualification is aimed at individuals aged 19+ wishing to extend their occupational competence as professionals within the health and social care and children and young people’s sectors and who are working as care managers or advanced practitioners within these sectors.
This qualification contains 6 pathways. Learners must select one of these pathways depending on their role and the type of care provision they work in.
Children and young people’s residential management
Children and young people’s management
Children and young people’s advanced practice
Adults’ residential management
Adults’ management; and
Adults’ advanced practice.
* This pathway is no longer the required qualification for managers of residential childcare settings. As of the 5th January 2015, the required qualification for managers working in residential childcare and young people's residential childcare services is the HABC Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England) (QCF).
How long will it take?
To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake between 586 and 695 hours of learning, depending on unit choices.
These include systems that promote communication,
diversity and inclusion,
health and safety and risk management policies,
procedures and practices in health and social care or children's and young people’s settings,
partnership in health and social care or children's and young people’s settings and a research project within services for health and social care or children and young people.
This qualification is assessed by a portfolio of evidence.

Who is this qualification for?
This qualification is the required qualification for individuals who are working as care managers or advanced practitioners within the health and social care and children and young people’s sectors. This qualification contains six pathways
*This pathway is no longer the required qualification for managers of residential childcare settings. As of the 5th January 2015,
all new staff/managers commencing work in children’s homes who do not hold a relevant qualification will be required to undertake the HABC level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England) (QCF).
This qualification forms the combined knowledge and competency element of the Higher Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management (England) - General Adult Social Care pathway ONLY.
This framework does not currently include pathways for people working in the Health Service or Children and Young People's Services. It can also be taken as a standalone qualification.
This qualification facilitates the learner to develop knowledge, skills and expertise in a management role in a number of different types of settings including an individual’s own home,
supported accommodation, day care or residential accommodation. Learners could be working with individuals who are vulnerable, have learning disabilities, sensory and/or physical impairments or with individuals who require additional support.
What specific entry requirements do learners need to take this qualification?
The qualification is approved for delivery to learners aged 19+years. It is also recommended that learners are currently working,
volunteering or on work placement in the health and social care and children and young people’s sectors in order to be able to demonstrate the required competencies.
Structure To successfully achieve this qualification the learner must complete a total of 90 credits.
Learners must achieve all six units from the mandatory group totalling 30 credits, the core mandatory units for their chosen pathway and the remaining units to be chosen from the optional groups for the selected pathway.

Learners undertaking this qualification will be managing services for children and young people from birth to 25 years of age.
